Vegetable-Tanned or Chrome-Tanned: The Choice That Fixes Everything Else
Almost every technique on this bench assumes vegetable-tanned leather. Wet moulding, burnished edges, creased folds and repairability all depend on the fact that veg-tan is still a living material that responds to water and pressure. Chrome-tanned leather is more water-resistant and more uniform, and it will refuse to do half of the things this workshop does.

Reference table Tannage against behaviour, tools and repair
| Tannage | Moulds wet | Darkens with use | Tool marks | Repairable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetable (veg-tan) | Yes, excellent | Strongly, within months | Burnishes, takes creases | Fully — can be re-wetted and reshaped |
| Chrome (chrome-tan) | No, it springs back | Barely | Shows stitch marks permanently | Limited |
| Combination (retan) | Partly | Slightly | Some burnish | Limited |
| Brain-tanned | Yes, very well | Strongly | Soft, marks easily | Fully |

What vegetable tanning actually is
Veg-tan hides are tanned with plant tannins — bark, mimosa, quebracho — over two to six weeks in a series of pits or drums of increasing concentration. The tannins bind the collagen and stay in the leather, which is why the leather is stiff, smells of wood and darkens with sunlight and handling.
That residual tannin is what makes wet moulding possible. When a cased veg-tan hide is formed over a shape and dried, the fibres set in the new position and stay there. Chrome leather, tanned with chromium salts in about a day, has fibres that are lubricated and mobile: it stretches, then springs back.
Where chrome wins
Chrome-tan is more uniform, more water-resistant, softer and cheaper. For linings, shoe uppers, upholstery and anything that has to be soft over a large area, it is simply better than veg-tan. Chrome-tanned suede is the best lining material on the bench: 1.0 mm, soft, and it does not darken or transfer colour.
Chrome is also more resistant to sweat. A chrome-tanned watch strap will outlast a veg-tan one around the wrist, because the chrome leather does not absorb salts and darken. If a customer wears a strap against skin and does not want patina, chrome is the honest recommendation.
Why this bench is built on veg-tan
Burned edges, wet moulding, crisp creases and the ability to re-wet a piece five years later and reshape it — none of these work on chrome leather. Repair is the biggest one: a veg-tan bag strap that has stretched can be re-cased and re-formed; a chrome strap that has stretched is scrap.
Veg-tan also finishes predictably. It takes dye evenly, it burnishes rather than fuzzing, and it holds a crease set with a bone folder. If you are learning, work in veg-tan: the leather tells you what you did wrong instead of hiding it.
Practical notes when buying
Ask for the tannery and the tannage, not just the colour. Two hides the same shade can be one veg-tan and one combination-tanned, and the difference shows up the first time you case the leather and it springs back in your hands.
Veg-tan darkens in sunlight. If a customer needs a matched set, cut every piece from one hide in one session and store the finished goods away from a window. Two pieces cut from the same hide and left on different shelves for a month will be visibly different colours.
